Vintage Burmese Silk, 2
Vintage Burmese Silk, 2
This soft and delicate textile is known traditionally as Luntaya Acheik. These handwoven and hand-dyed silk textiles were traditionally reserved for royals and high ranking officials because of their intricacy and beauty. The word Luntaya means ‘100 shuttles’ which refers to the number of thread shuttles needed to weave a single textile. It takes 2 people working together for 1-2 months to weave a single cloth. The typical wave pattern you see woven into Acheik textiles are a reference to Buddhism, the primary religion in Myanmar.
While contemporary versions of Acheik are available and made of cotton and silk blends, vintage forms of these textiles are increasingly rare and notably more complex.
