Philippine Santo, La Naval de Manila
Philippine Santo, La Naval de Manila
The practice of creating Santos began in Spain. Religious images were commonly decorated in ornate religious clothing. Today Santos remain a living tradition of religious iconography and folk art in Mexico, Philippines, Vietnam and other countries.
This Santo is especially elaborate, after the incredible original which can be found at the Santo Domingo Church, in Quezon City which measures nearly five feet tall. The body of La Naval de Manila in Quezon City is made of hardwood, and her face and hands, as well as the entire Child Jesus, are made of solid ivory. She has always been decorated with elaborate garments and a crown, which is what inspired the unusually elaborate detail & care on this special Santo.
