Oaxacan Carved Wood Mermaid & Child, Coindo Melchor Gomez

Handcrafted in Oaxaca, Mexico by artisit Coindo Melchor Gomez, signed and date 1998.  

A striking piece of Oaxacan folk art: a hand-carved, hand-painted wood mermaid holding her child close, both with wide painted eyes and bold red lips. Her deep blue tail is covered in silver-outlined scales with red dots and ends in a red-tipped fin, while the little one's matching tail is red and gold. The pair rests on a pink base. Carved by Coindo Melchor Gomez, a master carver from a well-known Oaxacan woodcarving family in San Martín Tilcajete, whose grandson carries on the tradition today. Each piece is handmade, so no two are exactly alike.
