OUR STORY

Cargo began in 1996, founded by ceramic artist and folk art collector Patty Merrill as a way to celebrate and sustain endangered traditions while fostering connections with global makers and artists. In 2008, interior designer Bridgid Blackburn joined as a partner, bringing a fresh perspective and deepening the creative vision. By 2014, we found our home in a historic Central Eastside warehouse—a stunning space filled with old-growth timber beams and soaring ceilings that reflect the timelessness of the goods we carry.
In 2020 Cargo evolved into the Cargo Emporium, a vibrant marketplace that now features in-store shops from like-minded vendors. This transformation has turned Cargo into a dynamic community hub, where many well-known local businesses come together under one roof to offer a rich and diverse shopping experience. Each vendor shares our passion for artistry, sustainability, and storytelling, creating a unique blend of offerings that range from handcrafted goods to innovative designs. Visitors can explore an eclectic mix of products, meet the makers, and immerse themselves in the collaborative spirit that defines the Emporium.
A Global and Local Community
Over the years, we have partnered with artisans and merchants from Guatemala, Vietnam, the Philippines, Japan, India, Mali, and beyond. At the same time, we remain deeply committed to supporting local artists and traders. These relationships have not only enriched our inventory but also cultivated lifelong friendships. Our talented staff—many of whom are artists themselves—carry forward this spirit of community and creativity.
Cargo is more than a store; it’s a journey of spirit, time, and place. Whether you’re seeking a one-of-a-kind piece for your home, a meaningful gift, or simply an inspiring experience, we invite you to explore the world through our curated collections.
Discover the beauty. Celebrate the tradition. Come along for the journey.
