Mom + Pop Shop
Mom + Pop Shop is an assemblage installation in Cargo's freight elevator that playfully examines the role of the neighborhood brick-and-mortar shop as both a practical resource and a cultural touchstone. Inspired by Mom + Pop corner shops —part convenience, part gathering place—the work explores what we consider “essential,” and how those essentials are shaped as much by emotion and memory as by necessity.
"Shelves" stocked with everyday objects reference the visual language of convenience store merchandise: snacks, trinkets, household staples, impulse buys. We invite our artist collaborators to create items that explore what is essential, prompting viewers to question the line between need and want. Is a pack of gum essential? A can of beans? Or a friendly face behind the counter?
Brick-and-mortar stores have long served as informal community hubs. They are places where neighbors run into one another, where news is shared, where routines take shape. Family-run and generational shops, in particular, carry stories within their walls—stories of resilience, adaptation, and care. In an era defined by speed, delivery apps, and digital convenience, the Mom + Pop Shop reflects on what our corner shops truly provide.
At once nostalgic and gently satirical, Mom + Pop Shop honors the enduring spirit of the local shop while inviting local artisans to create essential products in the medium of their choice, and engaging viewers to reconsider what we truly need, what we value, and what we might lose if the lights in the window go dark.
The installation celebrates the humble storefront as a space of belonging, offering our art community a venue to present their unique view of essential products, and fosters a deeper conversation about the vital thread in the fabric of community life that the Mom + Pop Shop weaves.
