“Warm colors like terra-cotta give off a cozy vibe,” Puji says. “It’s like the walls are giving you a hug. But for a peaceful space, look to nature for cues. A cloudless sky, the feeling of standing at the water’s edge, the caress of fresh air on your face—these sensations foster calm.”
For a peaceful vibe, a color like Simple Serenity is nicely complemented by earthy tones and textures. Handwoven natural fibers and natural wood tunes reinforce the color’s connection to nature. Cargo’s African indigo cloths and the rustic wool throws from Xuxo, for instance, are enhanced by the restful color. The organic shapes of a stately puzzle fig or cascading philodendron from Appetite further remind us of the natural world.
Brigid also encourages us to remember the senses beyond sight as we create a peaceful space. “A hint of incense or a spruce candle can be very calming.” Similarly, the sound of a singing bowl will gentle a busy mind and draw it back to the present. The texture of handwoven wool or carved teak under your hand can ground you.
Puji says colors like Simple Serenity are perfect for bedrooms, meditation spaces, and workout rooms. Brigid agrees, pointing out that you don’t need an entire room to create a peaceful space. A corner of the dining room that has become your ad hoc home office, for example, can be transformed by one painted wall or even a cool-hued throw pillow.
