Cargo's New Departments

If you have come to know Cargo over the years, the one thing that you can depend on is change! Whether it’s new inventory from local makers, goods coming in from overseas in shipping containers, changing displays and entry decorations or new, exciting vendors, we are always on the move. You may be wondering what we’ve been up to over the past year? While we were closed in 2020, and now open with limited hours, we’ve not been idle! We’ve been busy reimagining the space, remodeling, opening unused areas, painting with new fresh colors, and building new departments.

Cargo now has specific departments, each with someone in charge of nurturing its offerings. Working with our talented team, we’ve expanded and strengthened three departments that we are excited to share with you; Apothecary, Japanese Ceramics, and a new Kids department! Each department features small, often local makers and keeps environmental sustainability in mind. The curation of the departments is led by the people heading them up; Sita in Apothecary, Paul in Japanese ceramics, and Sarah in Kids. All of whom have a personal connection with their department.

APOTheCARY

Sita says that “I’m so inspired by the thoughtful and unique formulations that small batch apothecary brands make and can’t wait to highlight those artisans. Apothecary is such a personal thing, both for the maker and the buyer, and I look forward to catering to those who value natural wellness and want accessible self-care. I’m focused on bringing in brands that aren’t easily found in the Portland shopping market and that place importance on sustainability and natural ingredients. My experience with my own apothecary line, Running Late Apothecary, has given me insight into what makes a brand truly special. I’ll also be building out the home apothecary offerings to include room sprays, candles, incense as well as a curated selection of pajamas and loungewear. Keep an eye on the back corner of the store to see the evolution.”

JAPANeSe CeRAMICS

Paul says that he is “Excited to be expanding the contemporary ceramics in Cargo’s home goods department. We are bringing in beautiful pieces with a focus on quality and longevity. Part of the amazing nature of Japanese ceramics is their ability to become even more beautiful with time, meaning, these pieces not only last for many years, but they will take on new life as time goes on. On top of this, we are introducing more vintage and antique pieces to our curated collection. These specific pieces will be geared toward Chado, tea ceremony, practitioners and exemplify the long craft history of Japan. Something for everyone!”

KIDS

Sarah tells us that “Cargo has always carried kid’s stuff and is a fun place for children even when the product is unrelated to them. It’s simply the visual simulation, the colors, textures, the statues, the energy of well-loved & aged pieces that kids can naturally connect to. That being said, we really wanted to fine-tune our youth offerings and expand on some specific categories. The collection is curated around affordability, sustainability and unique items that have longevity. Personally, I’m interested in being playful & experimental when it comes to dressing my kid. I like slightly oversized outfits that can be kept and worn for many years as opposed to buying seasonally snug fits. I am focusing on this style for Cargo as well as gender neutrality and fun color palettes. We’re also excited to announce that a zero waste Cargo exclusive kid’s clothing line in the works! Stay tuned!”

With these new departments, customers will know that if they fall in love with a product, they’ll be able to get it consistently. If they have questions, the buyer for the department will be able to speak to it with knowledge and enthusiasm, whether the product is a package of artisan bath salts, an antique tea bowl, or locally made kids clothing. Keep an eye out for a new Ephemera & Crafts department, that will be curated by Cargo’s Aimee and Amy of Hello! Good Morning!, as well as a new textile room & workshop space!

The reimagined Cargo Emporium is everything you knew and loved, simply more deeply and thoroughly attended to. We’re “Your Happy Place,” version 2.0. Come in and see for yourself!
